Maj.President Kabbah with Maj. Gen. Sajjad Akram Gen. Sajjad Akram Bids Farewell

The UNAMSIL Force Commander, Maj. Gen. Sajjad Akram has taken formal leave of President marking the end of his term of service in the mission here in Sierra Leone.
During the farewell courtesies, Maj. Gen. Akram thanked President Kabbah for the immense support and cooperation he received from the government and people of Sierra Leone during his period of service. He prayed for prosperity and peace in Sierra Leone. Maj. Gen. Akram expressed confidence in the security forces, armed forces as well as the police, assuring the President of their ability to deliver. He, however, noted that although most of the problems have been addressed, there is still more to be addressed.

Wilberforce Barracks Project Inaugurated

The President, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, on Tuesday 27th September 2005, inaugurated the newly completed Wilberforce Barracks Water and Sanitary Conditions Improvement project.
The Wilberforce Barracks, which is the largest Barracks in the country, constructed during the colonial period had suffered neglect and abandonment over the last few decades. The project was launched a few months ago through a joint initiative of UNAMSIL, UNDP and the Government of Sierra Leone as a move to improving the water and sanitary services at the Wilberforce Barracks.

PRESIDENT KABBAH RETURNS FROM UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The President, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, has returned to Freetown after attending a high-level meeting of the 60th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, from 13th to 16th September 2005.
In his address to the General Assembly President Kabbah said, "While we are preoccupied with institutional reforms, and while we acknowledge its weaknesses, we should not allow the controversies of recent years to drown the positive impact the Organization has made in the lives of millions of people throughout the world. Let us think about the tremendous work of UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, ILO, UNHCR, OCHA, FAO and other organizations and agencies of the United Nations system. This sixtieth anniversary of the United Nations is therefore a time to celebrate all that the United Nations has achieved and is trying to achieve.
One such achievement is in the area of peacekeeping. In three months' time the people of my country will be saying goodbye to UNAMSIL, the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Sierra Leone. UNAMSIL is obviously a success story. We must tell it. We must applaud it. UNAMSIL has made a significant contribution to peace and security in Sierra Leone, and to some extent to stability in the West African sub-region as a whole.
I am pleased to inform this august Assembly that the mission of UNAMSIL should be considered accomplished. With the assistance and cooperation of UNAMSIL and the British-led International Military Advisory and Training Team (IMATT), the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces have now assumed their full constitutional responsibility for the security of the State".
President Kabbah also addressed the Columbia University's 3rd Annual World Leaders Forum in Connecticut.

Vice President Berewa Leads SLPP

Makeni, the Northern Province headquarter town was over the weekend flooded by members of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) and observers from all over the country as the long awaited delegates conference finally took off on Saturday, 3rd September.
The convention which was conducted in a peaceful atmosphere ended on Sunday, September 4th with Vice President Berewa emerging winner of the leadership of the party and consequently the Presidential nominee for the SLPP at the 2007 Presidential Elections. V.P. Berewa polled 291 votes followed by Charles Margai with 34 votes, while Rtd. Brigadier Maada Bio and J.B. Dauda polled 33 votes and 28 votes respectively.
President Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah was leader of the Party since 1996 and will end his presidential term in 2007. Delivering his last address as leader of the party during the convention at Makeni, President Kabbah extended profound gratitude to all those who supported him and insisted on him being the Party's flag bearer for the 1996 and 2002 elections. He stated that the successes which they achieved together are shared with all members of the Party.
Among other things he paid tribute to those who laid down their lives during the war to liberate the country and also remembered his late wife Lady Patricia Kabbah, as a great pillar of support in his ascendancy to the leadership of the party and subsequently to becoming President of Sierra Leone in 1996.
